The Last Wave
An erie movie from director Peter Weir. Set in modern Australia, an attorney becomes involved in a murder case that is far more complex than it first seems. Weir's fascination with all forms of water is critical to how the story plays out. One of the most intelligent depictions of the Aboriginal 'dream-time' and its impact on the characters and the country. Beautifully photographed, which makes the imagery even more unsettling. A movie that makes you think even as you shiver.
World's End
An English comedy with a dark edge, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead). There has never been a pub-crawl like this, and please, may there never ever be one. Funny as all git out, with a sudden twist in the plot that you will not foresee.
The Haunting
The original version, filmed in the early 1960s in a New England mansion reputed to actually be, well, haunted. Directed by Robert Wise and shot in black and white, there's no blood, no obscene language, and you might wish there were just to take your mind off the dread that continually scratches at your gut. Turn out the lights, turn up the sound, and if you've made the mistake of watching it alone, stop peeking between your fingers long enough to retrieve whatever stuffed animal had been your protector during childhood and bring them out of retirement.
